Day 91

Going back home was a defeat, one Katie struggled to see as a necessary step. Living with James had been nothing but an experiment gone wrong, a dream she had never fully embraced. That’s what she kept repeating like a mantra inside her head to avoid the emotional repercussions of the previous day.

Being on her own couch for the first time after a while, Ryan on one side and Michael on the other, should’ve felt familiar and provided solace. And yet, she was as uncomfortable as she’d been in a sterile hospital room. This apartment had stopped being home in the short time she’d spent away. That alone was an indication of the depth of her connection with the man who kept telling her he loved her, but she didn’t linger on that. If she did, she would have to remember that she had never said it back.

“I put your stuff in the taxi. The driver is waiting for you,” Sean said, coming into the house. He was remarkably relaxed, his shoulders having lost the tension they had been carrying around ever since he was told his only daughter wouldn’t grow old.

“Thanks, Dad.”

“But where will you go?” Michael questioned. He had always been supportive, but he found it less easy to keep on that track when he vehemently disagreed with her actions. She was about to abandon them, and that wasn’t something he could get behind.

“You don’t need to know that,” Katie said and tried to remove herself from her friend’s clutches.

“Who will be looking after you?” Ryan morosely asked, disheartened by the turn of events.

The girl smiled indulgently. “I’ve been pampered long enough. It’s time for me to take care of myself.”

That didn’t sit well with Michael, who seemed to be the only one inclined to acknowledge that her running away would have more consequences than making the three men in the room sad. “And James?” he asked. “How did he take it?”

Katie froze, her breath ending in a small hiccup. Her mind jumped back to the previous day. James’ forlorn figure would haunt her to the end of her days. She needed to do this, though, and she needed to do it alone. It wouldn’t do to give anyone hope only to snatch it cruelly away in a few months. Her plan could work, but it was more probable that it wouldn’t. For that reason alone, James needed to learn to be without her, to move on.

And if by some miracle she did make it back, it was her own grave she was digging right then. It would be on her to make things right between them, since her original plan to die alone had gone to hell.

“James was hurt,” she admitted at last. “When I got back to pick up my things, he wasn’t there.” She wasn’t sure if it pained her not seeing him one last time or if she was relieved she didn’t have to say goodbye again. “I haven’t seen him since yesterday morning.
